Summary
Globally, energy and food are the most important issues for every country. Energy and food shortages due to population growth and global warming are expected to become more serious. In particular, the food supply problem is becoming more serious due to climate change caused by global warming, and we are facing many problems such as rural population decline and aging. To overcome this, agriculture is becoming more and more institutionalized, and a new type of agriculture called vertical farming is emerging as an alternative to make the most of limited space. Vertical farming is an agriculture that can solve and reduce problems such as a decrease in farmland and farming population, environmental pollution due to abnormal climate, and questions about an aging society. By applying ICT technology to agriculture, various problems can be controlled and prevented through the use of cutting-edge agricultural technology.
However, the initial investment cost to implement a vertical farm is high, and the high energy consumption to produce crops is a factor that reduces the profitability of vertical farms. Among the ways to solve this problem, reducing operating costs may be one solution. However, more efficient ways to save energy were being attempted in institutional horticulture, where environmental control is more difficult than in vertical farms.
